31 March 2026 11:35 AM
The City’s Restricted Burning Period is now in effect from 1 April to 31 May 2026.
Garden refuse burning without a permit
Residents can legally burn small garden refuse piles without a fire permit under Section 24F(3) of the Bush Fires Act 1954, provided the following conditions are met:
- Only garden refuse is burned.
- The pile does not exceed 1 cubic metre (1m x 1m x 1m).
- Burning is only permitted between 6pm and 11pm and must be fully extinguished by midnight.
- Fires must be completely extinguished using water and/or earth—leaving smouldering piles increases the risk of re-ignition.
- A responsible person must be in attendance at all times until the fire is fully extinguished.
- Adequate firebreaks or hazard reduction measures must be in place around the burn area.
- No flammable material is allowed within 5 metres of the fire while it is burning.
- Means of extinguishing the fire must be available at all times.
Prohibited burning conditions
Burning is NOT permitted under the following circumstances:
- When a Total Fire Ban or Harvest & Vehicle Movement Ban is declared.
- When the Fire Danger Rating is High or above.
- When winds exceed 15km/h.
For more information, or to apply for a permit, go to the City’s bushfire important dates page or contact the Bushfire Preparedness Team on 9257 9999 or via email: enquiries@kalamunda.wa.gov.au
