Bush fire brigades comprise of volunteers who play an important role in protecting the Western Australian community from bush fires through fire prevention and risk management, fire suppression and fire safety education. Bush Fire brigades are administered and trained by their respective local governments and Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Kalamunda Fire & Rescue Service is an entirely volunteer station and is part of the Fire & Rescue Service of Western Australia. They protect the areas of Kalamunda, Lesmurdie, Gooseberry Hill, Walliston, and sometimes assist in surrounding areas. This volunteer services can be respond to anything from a smell of smoke in a house, to scrub and bush fires, traffic accidents and hazardous materials incidents.

When a natural disaster strikes – a storm, cyclone, earthquake, or flood – State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers can be found helping to secure communities and get them back on their feet. SES provides a wide range of services to help cope with the effects of natural disasters – from emergency repairs on buildings, to restoration of essential services and ferrying cargo and passengers across flood waters.
