Myths and Masterpieces: Young Artists Invited to Shine in Kalamunda’s 2025 Awards

30 May 2025 10:47 AM

The City of Kalamunda invites budding young artists to step into a world of legends, folklore and imagination as entries open for the highly anticipated 2025 Young Artist Awards.

This year’s theme, “Myths,” encourages artists aged 11 to 25 who live, work, study or volunteer in the City to explore identity, culture and storytelling through their artwork.

Mayor Margaret Thomas says the Awards offer a powerful platform for local creatives. “Our community is full of talented young people, and this event gives them the chance to share their voice and vision”.

“Myths invites deeply personal and imaginative expression. I encourage all eligible young people to take part—it’s an excellent opportunity to be seen, gain experience, and join our vibrant arts community.”

Shortlisted works will appear in a professional exhibition at the Zig Zag Gallery from 26 September to 12 October 2025, with the opening night and award presentations on Friday 26 September at 6pm. All exhibited works will be available for sale at the Artist Market in the Zig Zag Courtyard on Saturday 27 September 2025 from 11am to 3pm.

With a total prize pool of $2,200, including a $1,000 grand prize, the Young Artist Awards offer not only recognition but real support for the next generation of artists. To support entrants, the City will host a series of art workshops in the lead-up to the event, providing guidance on preparing artworks and presenting them for exhibition.

As part of this year’s Young Artist Awards, the Zig Zag Gallery is introducing new initiatives to further support and elevate young creatives. A Mentorship Award will be offered, pairing one exhibiting young artist with an early career or established artist for a series of six one-on-one sessions. This mentorship will provide invaluable career guidance, networking opportunities, and constructive feedback to help the recipient take the next step in their artistic journey.

Participants may submit up to two original works, accompanied by a high-quality image and a short artist statement. All artworks must be exhibition-ready.

Entries open Monday 2 June 2025 and close Friday 4 August 2025. For full details and submission guidelines, young artists are encouraged to visit the youth@kalamunda.wa.gov.au or call (08) 9257 9867 during business hours.
