Main Roads Roadworks update: Tonkin Highway Corridor (Roe Highway to south of Welshpool Road)
Roadworks update from Main Roads: The Tonkin Highway Corridor upgrade between Roe Highway and south of Welshpool Road will widen Tonkin Highway to six lanes, construct new grade-separated interchanges at Hale Road and Welshpool Road East, and deliver a new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists.
These upgrades will improve safety, reduce congestion and provide more reliable travel times along this important transport and freight corridor.
Site Establishment Works
Main Roads will be commencing site establishment works from Monday 21 September to Friday 27 November 2026.
Activities will include installation of project signage on road verges and medians and establishing a site compound on Hardey East Rd, Wattle Grove.
During sign installation works, a temporary footpath detour on Hale Road will be in place for approximately one day. Traffic controllers will be on site to assist path users and direct them to nearby safe crossing points.
Early works will also continue throughout this period, including potholing, geotechnical investigations, and pavement sampling as well as groundwater monitoring, preliminary fencing and bore drilling works.
What to expect
During these works, road users and shared path users may experience:
- Short term single lane closures, verge works and reduced speed limits on Hale Road and Welshpool Road East.
- Limited night-time lane closures on Tonkin Highway for service locating and sign installation works.
- Increased construction vehicle movements associated with the site compound and laydown on Hardey East Road.
- A short-term footpath detour on Hale Road for approximately one day.
- Construction vehicles, lighting and intermittent noise near work areas.
Traffic controllers and signage guiding road users safely through work areas
Works will also take place near pedestrian and cycling paths. Where required, personnel will be available to assist path users safely past the works area.
Please allow additional travel time, follow traffic signs and directions, and take care when travelling through the works area.
Please note that the timing of works may change due to weather conditions, operational requirements or workforce availability.
