Head lice are small parasitic insects that live on the scalp and feed on human blood. They spread easily through close contact, particularly among children, and can cause persistent itching and discomfort. While they are not known to spread disease, infestations can be unpleasant and disruptive.
The most effective way to control head lice is through regular inspection and early detection. Use a fine-toothed comb on wet hair to check for lice and nits (eggs), and treat infestations promptly with specialised head lice treatments available from pharmacies.
To prevent reinfestation, wash bedding, hats, and clothing in hot water, and avoid sharing hairbrushes, combs, or hats. Schools and childcare centres should be notified so parents can check and treat their children as needed.
