The City of Kalamunda is working with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to coordinate targeted fox control to protect local biodiversity, including several priority native species vulnerable to predation.
The program is in response to an increase in feral fox activity in the City of Kalamunda (on DBCA managed land). The program is expected to commence on Monday 20 April 2026.
Foxes are declared pests under the Biosecurity and Agricultural Management (BAM) Act 2007, and control activities are being carried out in accordance with all relevant legislation and permits.
These operations will occur within DBCA managed lands, including:
- Railway Heritage Trail Reserve, Gooseberry Hill
- Gooseberry Hill National Park (including Zig Zag Scenic Drive), Gooseberry Hill
- Gooseberry Hill Recreation Park, Gooseberry Hill
- Pomeroy Road Reserve, Lesmurdie
- Valencia Road Reserve, Pickering Brook
- Pioneer Park, Forrestfield

The contractor is licensed under the Animal Welfare Act 2002, Animal Welfare (General) Regulations 2003, and the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Regulations 2013, and holds the required permits issued by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD).
All activities will follow strict safety protocols:
- Signage will be placed at reserve entrances and near active trapping sites.
- Shooting will occur only under controlled conditions and at night using thermal imaging equipment.
- The contractor is first aid trained and equipped with comprehensive first aid and trauma kits, with access to both mobile and satellite communication.
The City’s Senior Project Officer – Natural Areas will be contactable at all times.
