The City of Kalamunda has identified the Welshpool Road East/Lewis Road intersection as a key area needing safety improvements due to frequent accidents and traffic issues.
From January 2019 to December 2023, there were 49 crashes at the Welshpool Road East and Lewis Road intersection. Out of these, 4 needed hospital treatment and 9 needed medical care. 32 crashes caused major vehicle damage, and 4 caused minor damage.
To address this, the City is implementing an interim design to slow traffic and enhance safety.
Works are scheduled to commence on 28 October 2024, with completion anticipated by (updated*) 6 November 2024. (this timeframe could change due to contractor availability and weather conditions). *
Interim upgrades include:
Upgraded kerb alignments: Enhanced vehicle guidance and improved sight lines for safer navigation.
Separation kerbing with frangible bollards: Increased vehicle separation and reduced collision impact.Speed cushions on Lewis road: Slower vehicle speeds for safer conditions, while still allowing access for buses and emergency services.
Traffic management measures will be in place during the works.
We appreciate your patience and ask that you follow signage and directions.
Future works:The long-term solution with partial traffic signals is still in the planning stage and will need further approvals. The City is committed to delivering a comprehensive fix for the intersection.
