Main Roads WA are planning to upgrade Tonkin Highway from north of Hale Road to south of Kelvin Road. The work will include major changes to the intersections with Hale Road, and Welshpool Road East, both being within the City of Kalamunda area.
The $366 million Tonkin Highway Corridor project is jointly funded by the Australian ($293 million) and State ($73 million) Governments. It is part of the broader Tonkin Highway transformation strategy which also includes Tonkin Gap and Tonkin Highway Extension.
The work will include widening the highway from four to six lanes, and building new facilities for pedestrians and cyclists along the corridor with links to the City's cycling network.
Planning and development work is underway to improve safety and reduce delays along the heavily congested section of Tonkin Highway from Roe Highway to Kelvin Road. The project will be delivered under two contracts; the first includes the intersections along Tonkin Highway at Hale Road and Welshpool Road, and the second includes Tonkin Highway and Kelvin Road.
