Yes. The compost has been commercially processed and tested to meet quality and safety standards. It’s made from the same FOGO material collected from residents’ bins, turned into nutrient-rich compost suitable for gardens.
See this video on how FOGO Compost is processed.
It’s part of celebrating one year of FOGO and showing residents the real outcome of their efforts - their food and garden waste has been transformed into something valuable that supports local gardens.
It also helps explain the circular economy – local waste, local processing, local benefits.
Many Australian native plants are sensitive to phosphorus. They have evolved to be highly efficient at extracting the limited phosphorus available in native soils.
Once stock runs out, the giveaway will end.
We only had 8,000 bags available. There is the option to purchase extra bags at $6.00 including GST, while stocks last.
The compost giveaway is a thank you and a visual reminder of what happens when we sort waste correctly.
It shows the tangible results of separating food and garden waste - it becomes compost that benefits local gardens and reduces landfill.
It all starts in the kitchen - those food scraps go into your little caddy, then into the green-topped FOGO bin. Once it’s collected, it heads to the processing facility where it’s shredded, screened and checked for anything that doesn’t belong.
From there, it goes to our composting partners where it’s mixed with things like garden clippings and chicken manure. It’s placed into long rows and aerated for several weeks as it naturally breaks down at around 60 degrees Celsius.
After that, the compost is screened, tested for quality and safety, and blended into different mixes suitable for gardens and landscaping.
The end result is clean, tested compost that’s ready for local gardens - it’s a great example of a circular system that starts right at home.
