Containers for Change

Containers for Change was launched on 1 October 2020 in Western Australia. There are different types of refund points available in Western Australia. These are:

  • Depots: Walk in or drive through to get your containers counted and refunded on the spot.
  • Self-Service Kiosks: A Kiosk will count your 10¢ containers one-by-one, and scan their barcodes to check they are accepted. Plus, they can process your refund on the spot.
  • Bag drops: Bags of containers can be dropped off at various locations as a convenient and contact free way to recycle and receive refunds via your scheme ID.
  • Reverse vending machines (RVMs): Self-serve by inserting uncrushed containers into an RVM so the machine can count your containers by scanning their barcodes.
  • Pop-up refund points: Organised by local operators, these appear at a set time and location for you to take your containers to them.

What can be returned?

Container Eligibility | Check For The 10¢ Mark | Containers for Change WA

YES: Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard drink containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible for a refund. The lids from Containers for Change Containers can be returned in a separate container (not milk bottle lids).

Eligible containers must:

  • Be included on the scheme’s list of products. Use our eligibility checker below to ensure your containers are eligible.
  • Display the refund mark (e.g. “10c refund at collection depots/points in participating State/Territory of purchase”)

What is not accepted?

NO:  Some drink containers are not eligible for a refund. Generally, excluded containers are those that are less than 150ml and greater than 3L.

Excluded containers include:

  • Plastic bottles: Water bottles, soft drinks, juice bottles, flavoured milk bottles, and sports drinks.
  • Glass bottles: Water, beer, pre-mixed spirits, and soft drink.
  • Drink cans: Soft drink, carbonated beverages, energy drinks, beers, and pre-mixed spirits.
  • Drink cartons: Flavoured milk cartons, juice cartons, juice boxes, boxed water.
  • Other: Juice pouches and water casks.
  • Bottle lids: Please take lids off all containers - we recycle these too, just separately.

Please do not crush any containers as the collection point will need to be able to identify the container as eligible or with self-serve depots the container's barcode has to be scannable for the machine to give you your refund.
