Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre

The City of Kalamunda continues to support the Kalamunda Secondary Education Support Centre (KSESC) by working with the students towards achieving their Duke of Edinburgh International Award – which provides youth with skills and experiences that are recognised by employers and educational institutions worldwide.

Students volunteer their time to manage 7.5ha of the Kalamunda Railway Heritage Trail Reserve between Collins Rd and Mundaring Weir Rd, in Kalamunda.

Throughout the school year the students contribute over 300 hours of volunteer time, undertaking weed control, rubbish collection path maintenance and wildlife surveys, in partnership with the City of Kalamunda and the Friends of Railway Heritage Trail Reserve. The students also learn about bird identification, the importance of native wildlife and Aboriginal cultural values.

An extension of the strong partnership formed between The City of Kalamunda and KSESC is the recent implementation of a Youth Action Kalamunda (YAK) sub branch. The City works with the YAK team to initiate and implement projects that are of importance to the students and the school, giving the opportunity for the YAK team to learn new skills, be inspired, share ideas and develop creative solutions to community issues.

If you would like to volunteer to protect and enhance a local reserve near you, or would like to discuss a potential environmental project, please contact the City’s Parks and Environmental Services team at environment@kalamunda.wa.gov.au or call (08) 9257 9809.
