Works will this month commence to improve pedestrian facilities at a number of key locations throughout the Kalamunda Town Centre.

The scope of work includes improvements to the footpaths and speed hump line-marking on Haynes Street between Canning Road and Railway Road, and improvements to the crossing on Barber Street, between Haynes Street and Mead Street.

A zebra crossing is also proposed to be implemented on Canning Road as this has been approved by Main Roads WA. However this is subject to further discussion, with the City to seek community feedback on an additional safety mechanism such as a puffin.

A puffin has a signal that allows the community to cross at certain times, ensuring that vehicles understand they must stop.

Several car bays on Haynes Street and Barber Street that impede the safe vision between pedestrians and drivers will also be removed.

The works are expected to be complete by mid-May, pending weather conditions. Crews will be on-site Monday to Saturday between the hours of 7:00am and 5:00pm.

The City has advised that some footpath or lane closures may be required, to ensure the safety of workers and the travelling public. Signage will be in place to guide road users through any changed conditions.

The Kalamunda Town Centre has been a key focus for the City, with the development of a draft Activity Centre Plan currently underway. The community was invited to help shape the draft through a series of workshops and surveys in mid-2018. The first draft of the Plan is expected to go to Council by mid-year, with a public comment period to follow.
