VOTE FOR YOUR SUBURB NAME HERE

A short-list of suburb names for the locality surrounding the new Train Station, has been put to the City of Kalamunda community for voting. The short-list is made up of suggestions put forward by ratepayers as part of the City’s Name the Suburb Competition.

The locality, which is bound by Berkshire Road, Roe Highway and Poison Gully Creek in High Wycombe, spans across sections of Forrestfield and High Wycombe and is often dubbed Forrestfield North, which is the name of the district and local structure planning projects undertaken by the City

Mayor John Giardina said, “We’ve been working with our community over the past couple of years to develop a vision for the area surrounding the new Train Station. During consultation, our community shared concerns regarding a name for the area.

We listened to this feedback and in 2018 invited our community to share their name ideas. We had a fantastic response, with many residents eager to help share the future of the area they call home.

Together with Landgate and the State Governments of Australia, we reviewed all submissions and developed a short-list for our community to vote on.”

The short-list is made up of five options, including names that relate to the native flora and fauna of the area and Aboriginal names. Voters also have the option to retain the existing suburb names of Forrestfield and High Wycombe.

To make it onto the short-list, names had to meet Landgate’s Policies and Standards, which set out the requirements for locality naming. 

The winning name will see its applicant win a $500 prize. The shortlist of names include:

• Katadjen: Explanation for nomination: Noongar words meaning hill (Kata) and foot (djen), in recognition of the area’s location at the base of the escarpment. Katadjen may also be associated with Kaartdijin, which is the Noongar word for knowledge and the knowledge system.
• Koorliny: Explanation for nomination: Karla Kurliny/Kala Koorliny is the Noongar term for movement as in coming or going home, in recognition of the area’s location as a travel hub, bordered by a major highway, grain railway, and the new Forrestfield Station.
• Munday: Explanation for nomination: Munday was a Noongar leader who led the Beeloo people in 1929 and whom the nearby Munday Swamp is named after. Munday was one of the most important and successful negotiators for Perth’s Wajuk community.
• Quenda Grove: Explanation for nomination: Quenda is the Noongar word for bandicoot, the native fauna that inhabit the area. Quendas are found abundantly through the Perth Hills region.
• Smokebush: Explanation for nomination: Smokebush is a rare flora found throughout the area, as declared under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950. The Forrestfield North District Structure Plan focuses on retaining and protecting areas containing Smokebush.
• Voters can elect to retain the existing names of the suburbs within the locality, Forrestfield and High Wycombe.
