CEO Rhonda Hardy  said the City’s Parks and Environment team commissioned  Consulting Arborists, Paperbark Technologies, to inspect the Lemon Scented Gums along a portion of Welshpool Road known locally as the Avenue following community requests received in June 2019.

“The consulting arborist has recommended pruning of some of the trees to improve safety and also the removal of self-sewn and inferior trees, to create space for significant tree specimens to mature and develop to their full potential,” Ms Hardy said.

“This will reduce risks of tree and limb failure under stress for competing space, soil, nutrient and water and improve amenity of the landscape with an identifiable avenue of large trees.”

The City has engaged suitably qualified contractors to carry out the works which are expected to start shortly. 

Signage will be installed onsite one week prior and all work will be carried out between the hours of 9:00am and 3:00pm.

“The tree pruning and removal will potentially involve noisy machinery and there may be some impact on vehicle and pedestrian traffic while the work is under way so we thank everyone in advance for their patience,” Ms Hardy said.

“Council understand that these trees hold some historical and cultural significance and wish to reassure the community that the works are necessary to maintain the aesthetic and amenity to all. 

“We will plant new trees as well as along the Northern verge.”
