It’s happening fur-real: City’s draft plans for two proposed fenced dog exercise parks

You told us, we listened. The City of Kalamunda is seeking feedback on the proposed location and concept plans for fenced dog parks in the City, following on from extensive community feedback that the community would like to see this infrastructure in our community.

In a pawsitive development for canines, two sites are proposed, with one in Federation Gardens at Hartfield Park, and the second in Elmore Park (on Elmore Way) in High Wycombe.

The sites were identified as a result of a two-year investigation into the feasibility of fenced dog exercise parks which considered factors such as opportunities and constraints, facility need, local demand based on rates of dog ownership in the vicinity and individual site assessment.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said “In 2018, we received a lot of community feedback that dog walking is ranked fifth out of 10 most liked activities and that dog exercise areas were in the top 10 wanted improvements in the City’s public open space areas”.

“Most of us have a furry friend that we enjoy taking for walks, or taking to the park for a play. Not only does dog exercise improve the health and well-being of our pets, they also improve socialisation”.

“Fenced dog exercise parks create a space for exercising and socialising dogs in a safe and controlled environment for the benefit of both the dogs and their owners. In addition to providing a safe space for the dog to run around off-lead, dog exercise areas provide amazing agility exercise circuits such as ramps and jumps, as well as play areas such as sandpits”.

The concept plans for the two proposed sites are available to view on engage.kalamunda.wa.gov.au/dog-parks. We encourage residents to complete the online feedback form on behalf of their furry best friends, with any comments or suggestions they may have on the proposed concepts.

Hard copies of the feedback form concept plan for viewing will be available at all City libraries and Recreation Centres.
