Funerals in Public Places

28 January 2020 5:00 PM

The City of Kalamunda wishes to consult with the community to seek feedback on the level of community support in holding funerals in public places; parks, reserves and open spaces. At this stage we are undertaking preliminary community engagement in order to develop a draft policy for council consideration. We are seeking feedback on the broad level of support the public feels towards this undertaking.

The City of Kalamunda is dedicated to the well-being of its community, and death is a complicated issue. We want to ensure that we are being respectful of the wider communities’ thoughts and feelings on the celebration of life and death; in bringing funerals into a public place. Funeral and memorial practises are culturally grounded occasions, and funeral rituals are dependent on a range of social, cultural, regulatory and historical considerations, we’d like to understand how you feel about bringing funerals into public places as a part of our communities’ cultural fabric.

This subject was prompted from a funeral request that was made earlier in 2019 to hold a funeral in Stirk Park, Kalamunda. On this occasion a Special Council Meeting was held to assess the request, what we would like to do now is to develop a policy to fit this specific request, and to start the conversation with you in regards to how you feel funerals being held in our public places. Exposure to, or experience with death will occur for most of the City of the Kalamunda community at some stage. As such, this is a topic of social and cultural significance.
We want your views on this topic and how a policy development on funerals in public places will impact on you and your community.
