The Awards, now in their 28th year, recognises the high calibre of work being undertaken by organisations and individuals in conserving, developing and promoting Western Australian cultural heritage, and celebrates both Aboriginal and historic heritage in metropolitan and regional areas.

The Kalamunda History Village, considered a top tourist destination, is one of six finalists in the category ‘Contribution by a public or private organisation’, and one of 40 finalists in the Awards overall.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said, “Being a WA Heritage Award Finalist is a testament to the work being done in the heritage, conservation space and in developing the City of Kalamunda, and the wider Perth Hills region, as a premier tourist destination, connecting the community with our past.”

“I must make a special mention to all of the amazing volunteers at the Kalamunda and Districts Historical Society who run the Museum.”

The Kalamunda and Districts Historical Society manages the Village, which is the largest local history museum in Western Australia, depicting the unique hills life and industries centred around the development of the Kalamunda area.

With entry from the Zig Zag Cultural Centre, the Kalamunda History Village is a hands-on, interpretative museum curated around the original Railway Station buildings dated 1903 and 1927. The 1927 station was the largest on the Darling Range Railway and was affectionately known as the Zig Zag Railway on which the iconic G118 Locomotives made their way up to the timber country.

The Kalamunda History Village and Stirk Cottage are situated in pleasant surroundings close to the centre of the Kalamunda town site.

The annual Awards ceremony will not be held in 2020 due to COVID-19 safeguards. The Minister for Heritage is expected to announce the winners via a media statement at the end of this month.
