Mayor Margaret Thomas said the petition, delivered by the Probus Club of Kalamunda, was noted by Council at last month’s Ordinary Council Meeting.

“We are very aware of community concerns regarding pedestrians being able to safely cross roads within the town centre and have been advocating and lobbying for improvements for the past year,” Cr Thomas said.

The most tangible improvement has been approval from Main Roads to construct the ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossing on Canning Road.

“I am pleased Main Roads are listening to the community, and we are hopeful that further improvements will come on line following a recent green light to have a signalised crossing along Canning Road.”

The City continues to lobby Main Roads regarding posted speed limits in the Town Centre and has recently received approval in principle to reduce the speed limit in Haynes St & Barber St to 40 km/h. The City now wishes to seek the views of the community on these proposals.

Members from the Probus club noted the continued advocacy by the City and the role of the State Government in addressing Council at the meeting.

The recently  adopted the Kalamunda Town Centre Activity Centre Plan also flags the redevelopment of Central Mall and Haynes Street to create a very low speed traffic environment.

The City is also seeking community feedback on proposed Central Mall improvements, under design, are aimed at achieving a mixed-use area. All other designs for adjacent roads will start when funding is available.
