There are still a few weeks to go before submissions for the City of Kalamunda’s 2023 Young Artist Awards close so be sure to get your entries in before 4 August 2023.

This year’s theme - ‘A Medley of You’ - aims to inspire a journey of self-expression and identity to explore all the different aspects that make a person unique.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said the Young Artist Awards are a fantastic celebration of the City’s emerging young artists.

“These initiatives are vital to connecting the community with up-and-coming young creatives and helps to future-proof our arts sector,” Cr Thomas said.

For young artist Manami Teo, the City’s Young Artist Awards provided an unforgettable experience, deepening her understanding of what it means to be an artist and broadening her artistic expression.

Her winning piece from 2021, titled 'Holly Rayes,' was a captivating watercolor depiction of a café in Bassendean. Through delicate brushstrokes, Manami beautifully expressed the café's welcoming atmosphere and harmony.

Participating in the Young Artist Awards allowed Manami to engage further with the Kalamunda community. She has had the opportunity to meet new people and even showcase her musical talents at the 2022 Young Artist Awards, expanding her artistic horizons beyond visual art.

Reflecting on her journey, Manami expressed her gratitude to the City and the awards. "Thank you, Young Artist Awards, for blessing me with this opportunity. I am forever grateful for the artistic journey you have led me onto," she said.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said the impact of the Young Artist Awards extends beyond just recognition. “Manami's winning artwork was gifted to café owner, Holly, who was delighted with it. It’s the perfect example of the power of art to evoke emotions and create meaningful connections within the community,” she said. “Manami’s experience is a testament to the transformative power of the awards and the positive influence they have on young emerging artists.”

The City of Kalamunda encourages young artists aged 11 to 25 to follow in Manami's footsteps and participate in the 2023 Young Artist Awards. This esteemed event provides a platform to showcase their talents, express their unique perspectives, and contribute to the vibrant cultural landscape of the City of Kalamunda.

There are six categories and a total prize pool of $1100.Submissions close Friday 4 August 2023 with an exhibition planned to run from 23 September to 15 October 2023 at the Zig Zag Gallery, Kalamunda.
