Sign up for Clean Up Australia’s Great Spring Clean to help put the “great” back into the great outdoors

22 August 2023 12:40 PM

The Great Spring Clean is a new, nationwide initiative to tackle litter and improve the environment, fostering a sense of community engagement and environmental stewardship and encouraging Australians to take action in September.

Registration is free, and participants receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families, and community groups available (businesses are asked to pay a small fee to cover costs).

Per capita, Australia is now one of the biggest generators of single-use plastic waste – ahead of the United States. Our country's waste challenges continue to grow, and our plastic pollution problem is worsening. Australia produces 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, equating to 100 kg per person. Of this, only 13% of plastic is recovered and 84% is sent to landfill. More concerningly, around 130,000 tonnes of the plastic we consume leaks into the marine environment each year. By 2025 it is predicted that 99% of seabirds worldwide will have ingested plastic.

Clean Up Australia works with community, governments, and businesses to provide practical solutions to help all Australians live more sustainably every day of the year. Today the organisation’s focus is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already accumulated.

Clean Up Australia Founded by Ian Kiernan, AO, Clean Up Australia is one of the country’s most recognised and trusted environmental organisations. Clean Up Australia Day is the nation's largest community-based environmental event and more than 21 million Australians have participated since its inception.
