The Council at its Ordinary Meeting held 23 June 2020 proposed to make a new local law, the City of Kalamunda Dog Local Law 2020. The draft local law has been updated to reflect a more modern approach and current local government standards that align with recent amendments made to the Dog Act 1976.  One key change to the current local law is that local government will be able to designate Dog Exercise Areas and Prohibited Areas by resolution of the Council. 

 

Mayor Margaret Thomas said, “The proposed changes allow the City to make more parks and reserves available to dog owners and their furry friends.”

 

“For the safety and enjoyment of all; and the continued use of these spaces; it is essential dogs out in the community are supervised at all times by a person capable of controlling them. Dogs should be on a lead, unless in a specified dog exercise area and faeces are to be removed and placed in provided bins.”

 

“This is a wonderful opportunity to have your furry household member accompany the whole family to local community spaces.”

 

“These new doggy freedoms will be further complemented by a purpose-built dog park at Elmore Way Park. The upgraded space will feature dog agility equipment, a circulation footpath, seating, a drink fountain with tippable dog bowl, and a dog sand play / dig area. Elmore Way Park utilises $512,000 in cash-in-lieu funds, ensuring the cost does not come from Ratepayer funds.”

 

It is important all dogs are registered and microchipped as required by the Dog Act. Ensuring your dog wears a collar, with the City’s registration tag and your contact details will also help in the fast return of your beloved family member should they escape.

 

All dogs are to be kept fenced in a manner preventing them from passing over, under or through the fence, at all times; and premises zoned rural residential or urban are limited to two dogs over the age of three months.

 

The draft law provides clarity with respect to applications for the keeping of additional dogs, reflect changes to the Dog Act 1976 and provides updated prescribed offences and modified penalties to reflect current practices.
