Drivers asked to show caution
Road users are asked to slow down and take care on the roads, especially where Emergency Services or road-side workers are operating. Drivers need to be especially vigilant during wet weather when visibility can be poor and when stopping distances need to be increased to allow for slippery roads.
Mayor Margaret Thomas said, “The safety of everyone in our community is paramount. We want everyone to be going home to their loved ones at the end of the day and we are asking drivers to please be patient, and slow down around people working on or near the roads.”
The State Government introduced the SLOMO (slow down, move over) to improve the road safety of people attending roadside emergencies in Western Australia. The law requires motorists to reduce speed to a maximum of 40km/h when passing incident response vehicles with flashing lights. The City recommends drivers adopt the 40km/h limit when passing other essential road-side services.
Even when not an emergency it is important that we are aware of our surrounding and travel with caution.
“The Kalamunda Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service has a team of volunteers on our roads and verges throughout the region continuously checking Fire Hydrants. They are inspecting over 800 fire hydrants every 18 months to ensure the City is prepared for fire emergencies. Please take care when travelling past them.”
