With more than 260 natural areas and 343 km of natural waterways the active contribution of community members is critical to the preservation of the natural ecosystem.

The City is facilitating a number of community planting days over the month of July and August,  with young, old, and everyone in between, invited.

Mayor Margaret Thomas said, “Last Friday we had the first in a series of planting days, which was held at Woodlupine Brook in Forrestfield. It was fantastic to see the friends Group, local community members, and some corporate volunteers from Bank West and Plantrite – along with Perth NRM, all come along to help with the morning. We saw many sedges and understory plants along the popular nature strip, between the shopping centre and Dawson Avenue planted – and everyone had a wonderful time.”

“Another session will be held this week at Juniper Way and then on August 2, we have another two planting days, at Jorgensen Park in Kalamunda and at Woodlupine Brook Reserve. Both events run from 9am – 12noon. Please bring your hat, gloves, water bottles and join in the community spirit.”

Mayor Margaret Thomas said, “The City is proud to have supported National Tree Day for many years and last year’s volunteers planted hundreds of seedlings at each of the sites.  Unfortunately, many of the official National Tree Day events have been cancelled across Australia this year due to the pandemic, so we are in a very fortunate position to be able to continue with our scheduled planting events.”

“This is a great opportunity to bring together friends and family and make a tangible difference to Woodlupine Brook Reserve, Juniper Reserve and Jorgensen Park. There’s nothing better than being able to return year after year to see the positive changes to the environment and being able to say we planted that; we made a difference.”

“We are so fortunate to have 40 ‘Friends of Groups’ who gift their time and skills restoring our bushland and controlling weeds. These annual tree planting days compliment the environmental work our volunteers do and create an occasion for us all to get together, give back to the community and to connect with nature and each other.”
