The City’s new flagship building has seven activity rooms, two halls, office space, a kitchen, outdoor play areas and a viewing deck overlooking the iconic Jorgensen Park and Kalamunda National Park.

At last night’s opening, Cr Thomas thanked everyone involved in the new community centre’s evolution including the Kalamunda Community Centre Reference Group, the Learning Centre, architects and contractors, past and present Councillors, City staff and the community for its ongoing support. Addressing the socially-distanced crowd, Cr Thomas said the new Kalamunda Community Centre is a shining example of innovative urban design that would add to the City’s amenity and identity.

“The modern design is timeless, and the use of stone and timber adds natural textures that embrace our ongoing desire to remain at one with the natural environment,” Cr Thomas said.

“Each room is named after a Noongar colour, representing the colours of the Wagyl snake, which is also recognised at the Bibbulmun Track. Room signage also displays design elements by local artist Aurora Abraham.”

Premier of Western Australia Hon Mark McGowan said, “This state-of-the-art facility provides a new hub for the local Kalamunda community, and importantly delivered local jobs throughout construction.

Federal Member for Hasluck, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM MP was proud to join in opening the new Kalamunda Community Centre.

“This marks a significant achievement for the Perth Hills community, where we now have a facility to host world class events, right in the heart of Kalamunda,” Mr Wyatt said.

“By investing in local projects like the Kalamunda Community Centre, we are supporting jobs, and our local community to thrive in the recovery from COVID-19.

“This new world class facility will contribute to the growing tourism sector of the Perth Hills along with providing local community groups with a place to host functions and meetings.”

Following the official opening, the community is invited to book a tour of the multi-purpose space on Wednesday, 17 February with 15-minute slots running from 9am to 3pm, with a maximum of 10 people per session to meet current health advice. Bookings are essential for the community tours via: trybooking.com/BOSID and close 4pm, Tuesday 16 February.

Funding for the building came from the State Government of Western Australia ($3 Million), Lotterywest ($2.5 Million) and the Federal Government ($1 Million) with a $150,000 contribution from the Kalamunda Community Learning Centre with the City investing significant time and resource in managing the project’s design and construction phases and will continue the operational management of the centre.
