The City of Kalamunda recognises places it considers have cultural heritage significance for the local community by including such places on its Municipal Inventory of Heritage Places.
A Municipal Inventory is a list of places that, in the opinion of the Local Government, are or may become of cultural heritage significance. The current Municipal Inventory includes individual place records that briefly locate and describe each place, outline its significance and provide a recommendation for the management of its cultural heritage values. The Municipal Inventory also includes a Thematic Framework that outlines the history of the City and is used to assess the cultural significance of places.
The Heritage Act 2018 requires all local government authorities in Western Australia to prepare a survey of places in its district that are, or may become, of cultural heritage significance.
A heritage survey was formerly referred to as a Municipal Heritage Inventory under the Heritage of Western Australia Act 1990, which preceded the Heritage Act 2018.

In 2019 the Municipal Heritage Inventory was updated to include the Heritage Area for the Avenue of Lemon Scented Gums on Welshpool Road East, Wattle Grove.
The Avenue of Lemon Scented Gums consists of two lines of Lemon Scented Gums (Corymbia citriodora) lining the southern (westbound) carriageway of Welshpool Road East for a distance of approximately 450m, with one line of approximately 18 trees along the median strip and another line of trees of 17 trees along the southern road reserve.
