Zig Zag AEDC Program

The Zig Zag AEDC Program is a grant-funded initiative supported by the Department of Communities. It aims to improve outcomes for families with children under five by utilising data from the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC). This project is a collaboration between the City of Kalamunda and the Zig Zag Early Years Partnership, which includes local services focused on fostering connection, information-sharing, and empowerment initiatives to support local families.

Zig Zag AEDC Program

What is the AEDC?

The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) is a nationwide census that provides valuable insights into children’s development and wellbeing. It assesses five key areas of early childhood development, known as ‘Domains’:

  • Physical Health and Wellbeing
  • Emotional Maturity
  • Communication Skills and General Knowledge
  • Social Competence
  • Language and Cognitive Skills

Data is collected every three years from children in their first year of full-time school. This data helps teachers, parents, communities, and governments track trends and respond more effectively to the needs of children at a local level.

What’s Coming in 2025?

Throughout 2025, the Zig Zag AEDC Program will introduce a range of activities to engage and involve the whole community, including:

  • Developmental Play Activities – Learn about the five Early Developmental Domains and how your everyday interactions with children contribute to their positive development.
  • Community Grants – Funding opportunities for locally run early childhood programs.
  • Connection Opportunities – Initiatives to support culturally diverse communities.
  • Intergenerational Connections – Encouraging relationships between different age groups.
  • Support for Families with Disabilities – Programs for parents, carers, and children with disabilities.
